Exploring the potential and limits of the CFSP: the EU diplomatic action on Iran’s nuclear issue

This project will analyse the European involvement in the dispute over Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, testing the potential and limits of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union on a crucial case study. The project will focus on the relation between the core group (formed by France, Germany, and the United Kingdom) that has led the European diplomatic efforts and the EU as such. The project will assess the functionality of this peculiar negotiating framework and the mechanisms established to ensure the EU’s involvement. The diplomatic initiative on Iran will be examined as part of the EU’s broader efforts to strengthen its international credentials by developing a more consistent approach to security issues.
