This project aims at examining the institutional dynamics that characterize the diplomatic systems set up by the Commission and Coreper II, in concentrating on the analysis of the institutional actors. It adopts an institutional approach to the study of European diplomacy, in combining the traditional research agendas of new institutionalisms in political science and in sociology of organization. In particular, the interest is the one of exploring the way in which the actors of European diplomacy conceive their mission of building the EU’s international identity by means of diplomatic practices. The link between objectives, self-representation and institutional socialization is the starting point of the analysis. The aim is, thus, to provide a definition of the main elements composing the Commission officials’ images of Europe (Hooghe, 2001) and to describe the kind of identity pursued through the Commission’s and Coreper’s diplomatic practices.
